Amid the carnage of war, he commandeers far more than just her home...

Widowed plantation owner Emaline McDaniels has struggled to hold on to her late husband’s dreams. Despite the responsibilities resting on her slender shoulders, she’ll not let anyone rip away what’s left of her way of life—particularly a Yankee officer who wants to set up winter camp on her land. With a defiance born of desperation, she defends her home as though it were the child she never had…and no mother gives up her child without a fight!

Despite the brazen wisp of a woman pointing a gun at his head, Colonel Reece Cutteridge has his orders. Requisition Shapinsay—and its valuable livestock—for his regiment’s use, and pay her with Union vouchers. He never expected her fierce determination, then her concern for his wounded, to upend his heart—and possibly his career.

As the armies go dormant for the winter, battle lines are drawn inside the mansion. Yet just as their clash of wills shifts to forbidden passion, the tides of war sweep Reece away. And now their most desperate battle is to survive the war with their lives—and their love—intact.

I am so glad I found No Greater Glory. I downloaded the Kindle version last fall but have had trouble getting to it. Then I found out I could get the audio version for $1.99. I could not pass that up and couldn’t wait to listen. It has been some time since I have read/listened to a novel set during the American Civil War, and I truly enjoyed this book!

Emaline McDaniels is a widow trying to keep her late husband’s plantation going, through these troubled times. Most of her slaves left when she offered them their freedom in 1859 when her husband died, but fortunately a few remained or all would be lost.

When Colonel Reece Cutteridge shows up at her plantation and tells her he will be using her property for winter’s quarters, she almost shoots him, but she forgot to release the safety. Fear and anxiety become Emaline’s daily companions. Her only salvation is working with the kind doctor in the hospital that has been set up on the first floor of her house.

While Emaline and Reece are adversaries, the attraction between them cannot be denied. Will the dreadful war keep them apart, or will they be able to overcome their differences and find a never-ending love?

This book is a saga for sure and is very well-written. It has passion, patriotism, and great drama with a good amount of history. The pacing is fast, especially considering the number of years this story spans.

Emaline is an unforgettable heroine. She is fighting to survive in a war-torn world, where her very existence is threatened, but she is a truly remarkable woman and refuses to allow the troubled times defeat her.

Reece is a tortured soul, my favorite kind of hero. He has suffered great loss and has thrown himself into being the best officer he can be. He is loyal to his men and honorable towards Emaline. His integrity is unquestionable and at times, causes him great emotional hardship.

While the romance grows slowly between the pair, mainly because of the circumstances, the passion is there from their first meeting and only grows stronger as the story progresses.

If you enjoy this time period and want a novel that is more than fluff, then you will love No Greater Glory as much as I did. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. I’ve already downloaded it and will be reading it soon. Happy reading!

No Greater Glory The Cutteridge Family Book 1 edition by Cindy Nord Romance eBooks Reviews

I loved the historical detail woven throughout the story in a way that never felt like a history lesson yet gave you a clear picture of what life was like on a Southern plantation or in an army camp during the Civil War.

Emmaline and Reece have found each other at exactly the wrong moment. She is a widow struggling to hold on to the plantation that meant much more to her late husband than she ever did. She has no hope for love in her life. She just wants to live the rest of her life in peace. Reece is a Union army officer trying to get himself and his men through the war in one piece. He's trying to forget the tragic death of his wife, and he certainly doesn't want to let another woman into his heart.

To have found each other and to feel the kindling of love in these circumstances is amazing to them both. Unfortunately, the war doesn't allow much time for romance. Emmy and Reece both have to do what they think is best to get through the war. Can they survive without each other?

This was a great book, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest in the series. I'd recommend it for anyone interested in the Civil War and anyone who is a fan of historical romance.
I really wanted to like this story all the way through. I am obviously odd man out according to these reviews. I enjoyed parts of this story. The ending is well done. The writing skill is good, however, this author is big on using elaborate words - flowery speech. If you enjoy this type of writing style, then this is for you. A bit too much for me. I did appreciate the author's research surrounding the Civil War. I think she did a fine job, through the characters, describing how the wages of war leaves permanent scars on its victims. The story revolves around the two main characters, Reece and Emaline, both drowning in the darkness that has invaded their lives, and how they are brought together in the worst of circumstances. Had a good, solid beginning.

My issue with Emaline's and Reece's characters is this When they first meet, Emaline is holding a rifle, shaking with fear, as she pointed it at Reese, an army colonel who is commandeering her home. Ready to shoot him to protect her home, and all the while knowing she is is surrounded by eminent danger, she suddenly takes the time to ogle his muscles, and his ruggedly handsome face, while imagining his hands smoothing her skin ... and goodness knows what else! What?? Who does this? Just wasn't realistic. You can almost hear crickets chirping!! lol. Ruined it for me. In my opinion, it changed what I thought would be more of a realistic and exciting read into something that read like a "dime store" novel, at times. Ugh! Disappointing. It's hard to believe that with several armed and intimidating looking soldiers staring her down, threatening her and knowing what they were capable of doing to her, that the "eye candy" she was ogling, could distract her from the horrifying predicament she was in. Unless, I suppose, this be a person's brand of excitement ...

Attraction, and then love, of course, ensues. I should say that lust ensues ... until nearly two - thirds through the story when true love is finally revealed, and makes it grand appearance between Reese and Emaline. I can understand the obstacles they faced, but in the midst of one of the most devastating wars in history, where "time," for anyone touched by it, was more precious than ever, and with their passionate intimacy, including everything else they had been through together ... their relationship just seemed to drag on. I am not keen on authors who throughout the story line focuses on the physical desire to keep sexual tension high for the reading audience. Some is enjoyable, of course, but not at the expense of giving unequal importance to the other facets of a loving relationship. Each time the two reflected on one another, it seemed to be much more about the physical. There are, however, definitely some touching moments. Apart from these things, I found the story line was good. Just couldn't get passed my issues.

I found the stories I have read from this author - in my opinion - to be a little too much of the same thing. Although, this author seems to have a decent sized reading audience, proving that she appeals to a certain audience. She most definitely knows how to capture her audience. For me, not so much.
